What are some reasons to buy compostable paper cups?

In today's world, we're encouraged to buy compostable paper cups whenever possible, but how can we do that? There are several benefits to using these cups. Not only do they help the environment, but they're also very cost-effective and convenient.

Compostable
While many paper cups are compostable, they are still plastic. While they break down faster than most other plastics, they still remain in landfills or the ocean for years. Luckily, aqueous-coated paper cups are both compostable and recyclable.

The main difference between compostable cups and compostable paper is that the compostable cup is made from organic material. This means that it's better for the environment than the plastic derived from oil. Another major drawback is that the takeaway cup lids are made of rigid polystyrene, which is not recyclable. The polystyrene must be removed from the cup before it can be composted. This can be both complicated and expensive.

Biodegradable
When choosing to buy disposable coffee cups, consider the environmental impact of these cups. A biodegradable paper cup is compostable, which means it can decompose at home and eventually be turned into compost. A compostable paper cup is biodegradable, meaning it breaks down within four to six weeks, while regular plastic cups take hundreds of years to break down. Biodegradable paper cups are also recyclable, and most regions of the UK have composting facilities.

Even if you choose biodegradable compostable paper cups, it is important to remember that despite their environmental benefits, they still require resources and energy to make them. The process of making paper cups also creates waste, which negates the environmental benefit. Nevertheless, many companies have begun offering biodegradable compostable paper cups. The benefits of these products are clear, and many consumers are starting to make the switch.

Sustainable
The production of sustainable compostable paper cups requires special climate conditions. The temperature of the composting facility is not the same in every state. Because of this, the cups need to be stored at the appropriate temperatures and do not completely decompose. In addition, the energy required to produce one paper cup is enormous. Even if these factors are taken into account, the environmental impact of paper cups is still significant, considering the global addiction to coffee.

While these cup materials are not 100% recycled, they contain 92% paper by weight. The remaining 8% of the product is plastic. This means that the cup is not recyclable and is adding to landfills. The packaging of plastic-coated paper cups is another issue. Plastic-coated paper cups do not compost and are not recycled and increase the amount of waste on landfills. This problem is caused by the fact that paper cups do not have lids that can be recycled.
